In the 1980s, personal computers gained prominence, largely thanks to the CPU (central processing unit). The CPU is the brain behind your computer, performing basic arithmetic, logic, and input/output operations specified by program instructions. Notable giants in the CPU field include Intel and AMD.

CPUs are good at sequentially processing instructions – executing instructions one at a time. And that’s good enough for most of our everyday tasks, including web browsing, document editing, and running software applications.
