TOI takes stock of the fires blazing in different parts of the country

India's forests are blazing. Uttarakhand is seeing an unprecedented number and intensity of forest fires, which have burned nearly 20sqkm of forests this year, while Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha are battling infernos.

In April, at least 40 fires have been reported in Uttarakhand, so far. Wildlife reserves and crop fields across the state have been gutted. Yet, it is nothing compared with the 44,800 incidents in Maharashtra from January to March 2021 – double the number of fires in the same period in 2019.
