The American and German defence ministers were in India recently; the contrast between the two visits couldn’t have been starker

On June 4, US defence secretary Lloyd J Austin III arrived in New Delhi on a two-day visit. He was here just over a year ago. This time, his intention was to “reinforce the burgeoning defence partnership” between the US and India ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Washington, DC slated later this month.

A day later, German defence minister Boris Pistorius also landed in New Delhi. Other than announcing his country’s growing interest in the Indo-Pacific region, Pistorius had the long-pending sale of six German-built submarines to India on his mind.
