TOI photographers capture the care, compassion and clinical attention given inside the sterilised environment of Kerala's Covid-19 wards

With due permission to document the routine of frontline staff battling the Covid-19 pandemic, I arrived at the Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital on April 22. It was probably just another day in the life of the medical staff there, but for me, who was witnessing things on ground zero for the very first time, every second was anxiety-ridden.

First thing was the silence, overwhelming and a palpable presence, in the corona OP (out patient) and isolation ward situated at the extreme end of the compound. As I walked through the OP ward I could see people seated at a safe distance awaiting their turn to be inspected and medicos running the length and breadth of the corridor with files. Suddenly the silence was shattered by the sound of weeping – a woman interacting with the doctors presumed she had already contracted the deadly virus.
