VELLORE: The Vellore police on Saturday arrested a 21-year-old man on charges of possessing Rs 50,000 counterfeit currencies in the denomination of Rs 1,000. The arrested was identified as Mahadab Kaviraj from Naida district, West Bengal.
Police said Kaviraj was attempting to recharge his cellphone for Rs 150 at a petty shop by paying a counterfeit Rs 1,000 note.
The shopkeeper found the note fake and consulted his friends in the neighbouring shops. His friends too ascertained that it was a counterfeit note.
When they questioned him, the man attempted to escape. However, they managed to secure him and alerted police.
A police team from the Vellore (north) police station rushed to the spot. They found that the man possessed 49 more counterfeit notes in the denomination of Rs 1,000.
They booked him under Sections 489-B (using as genuine, forged or counterfeit currency notes or banknotes) and 489-C (possession of forged or counterfeit currency notes or banknotes) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested him.
The police produced him before a local court that remanded him in judicial custody.
Initial inquiries revealed that Kaviraj came to Vellore to meet his lover, who has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital. He has been in relationship with the woman, who was married to another man. Kaviraj too was married, police said.
