Congress's Mukesh Malhotra defeated BJP's Ramniwas Rawat in Vijaypur bypolls by 7,364 votes.
The counting of votes for Vijaypur assembly bypolls in the Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh began at 8 am on Saturday.
The vote counting for the Vijaypur seat was carried out in 21 rounds for 327 polling stations in the assembly area.
A high voting turnout of 77.85 per cent was recorded in Vijaypur in the polling held on November 13.
The bypoll for Vijaypur was mandated after the then-sitting Congress MLA, Ramniwas Rawat, resigned and joined the ruling BJP. He was subsequently appointed as a minister in the Mohan Yadav cabinet.
In the last assembly elections in 2023, Ramiwas Rawat of Congress secured his win with 69,646 votes against BJP's Babulal Mevra.
Previously, in the assembly elections of 2018, BJP’s Seetaram emerged as the winner securing 34.86 per cent votes against Ramniwas Rawat of the Indian National Congress who fell short of 2,040 votes.
In Maharashtra, the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition has solidified its dominance, largely due to effective outreach to women voters through targeted welfare schemes. The Mahayuti alliance has won 236 seats while the MVA has been restricted to 48 seats. The BJP alone looks set to win 132 seats.
