NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Vajpayee may have blunted the opposition onslaught on the floor of the Lok Sabha successfully, but there are concrete signals coming in from Lucknow and Ayodhya to suggest that the VHP is still determined to rock the NDA boat from within.

''''We shall build the temple, come what may,'''' says VHP boss Ashok Singhal, who launched a padyatra in the vicinity of Lucknow on Wednesday to mobilise what he describes as active mass support for temple construction.

From here, the VHP working president is scheduled to move on towards the rural areas in Faizabad and Basti districts. He will be joined by his firebrand lieutenant, Praveen Togadia, on Friday. The idea is to literally encircle Ayodhya with dedicated Ram bhaktas, who would be prepared to face any challenge, mental or physical.

The VHP chief distributes Ram rakhsha sankalpa sutras to the rural folk along the way. One also comes across a pamphlet which, apart from other things, contains some choicest two-liners: ''''Ram lala ke vaste; shakti pradrshan ke raste'''', and ''''Vishal pradarshini ki lalkar, shakti hi vijay ka aadhar''''.

Judging by the mood of all those who are accompanying Singhal, it is clear that the hardcore elements in the Hindutva camp are hardly impressed by the PM''s otherwise remarkable ability to keep the NDA alliance afloat under one banner despite odds. ''''We shall be impressed only if the PM manages to bring in a legislation for the construction of Ram temple on the disputed site at Ayodhya,'''' they say.

''''We are doing our job regardless of what the government says or does and let it be clear once and for all that we shall not stop till our goal is achieved,'''' B N Shukla, working president of the VHP''s Awadh region, says adding that tens of thousands of volunteers are being registered every day across the state. ''''And they would all swing into action the moment the marga darshak mandal gives them the green signal,'''' he adds.
