The system of providing security to select public figures and VIPs is widely misunderstood and public scrutiny of it has been reignited by the tragic killing of the talented young singer Sidhu Moose Wala. Earlier, the Punjab government had withdrawn the security cover of 424 persons and this decision was hailed by some for putting an end to the ‘VIP culture’, while others accused the government of political gimmicks and endangering the lives of public figures. What appalled many onlookers was the leaking of the names of persons whose security was withdrawn to social media, as such decisions are usually kept confidential.
