NEW DELHI: Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday suspended four government officials following the collapse of a bridge over the Mahisagar river in Vadodara district.
The Padra police also registered an accidental death complaint in connection with the collapse.
The incident occurred around 7am on Wednesday, when a slab of the Gambhira-Mujpur bridge linking central Gujarat to the Saurashtra region gave way, sending vehicles plunging into the river below. Sixteen people have been confirmed dead.
Nine people were rescued, five of whom sustained injuries and are being treated at SSG Hospital in Vadodara.
According to the district superintendent of police cited by PTI, none of the injured are in critical condition. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collapse.
