A saffron wave had swept Uttar Pradesh in 2014 when the BJP and allies won an unprecedented 73 out of the 80 seats in the state. However, the contest seems more evenly poised this time with rivals SP, BSP and RLD joining hands to defy the Modi juggernaut. Can a united fight by the Mahagathbandhan translate into rich electoral dividends or will the BJP come close to, or even breach, its 2014 tally? Priyanka Gandhi fails to make impact in UP
Priyanka Gandhi campaigned aggressively for Congress in 26 out of a total of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh but has failed to make an impact.
She addressed 33 public meetings while campaigning in parliamentary constituencies including Amethi, Raebareli, Varanasi, Saharanpur, Bijnor, Ghaziabad, Fatehpur Sikri, Bahraich, Dhaurahra, Barabanki, Kanpur, Jalaun, Jhansi, Mirzapur, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Domariyaganj, Maharajganj, and Fatehpur.
Her brother and Congress president Rahul Gandhi is trailing behind BJP nominee Smriti Irani in Amethi by over 11,000 votes.

BJP, ally maintain lead over rivals in UP
The BJP and its ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) continued to march ahead of their rivals, leading in 59 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, according to the Election Commission trends at 1 pm.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading in Varanasi by a huge margin of more than 2.19 lakh votes against Samajwadi Party's (SP) Shalini Yadav -- his nearest rival, the data showed.
The BJP was ahead in 58 seats and the Apna Dal (S) in one. The opposition alliance of the Bahujan Samaj Party and the SP appeared to be doing well in 19 seats.
