"The relationship that we are building with India is not to the exclusion of other countries," Mattis told reporters. "It is specifically designed for inclusion using a rules- based order that any nation that is living by the traditional rules of non-interference in other states in today's age of anti-terrorism, they will not find this relationship in any way adversarial," Mattis said in response to question.

“The secretary (Mattis) will emphasise that the United States views India as a valued and influential partner, with broad mutual interests extending well beyond South Asia. The secretary will also express US appreciation for India’s important contributions toward Afghanistan’s democracy, stability, prosperity, and security,” reads a statement issued by the US Department of Defence.

Mattis’ visit is meant to underscore the US commitment to India as a strategic partner.
He will meet PM Modi and defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman during his India tour, which ends on September 28.
