UPS announced earlier it is investing around $15-20 million in India to strengthen its existing technology teams and the new Chennai centre is a part of this investment.

Spread over 51,000 sq.ft in RMZ One Paramount in Porur, the centre commences operations with a team of around 100, who will work with UPS’ technology teams in the US and Europe to work on new-age technologies powering the operations of UPS.

The company intends to scale this Chennai team to hire around 300 by the end of this year, and up to 1000 people by 2025.

“In the last two years, more than 30 GCCs have come up in Tamil Nadu, and these have created jobs for over 47,000 people,” TN CM MK Stalin said in his speech at the launch. “In the next 3-4 years, we hope to accelerate this number,” he added.

Industries minister TRB Rajaa urged UPS to leverage TN’s manufacturing ecosystem for their hardware needs around RFID trackers and drone technologies.

“UPS’ technology centres in India will work on par with our global teams on advanced technologies including AI, automation, robotics, and data analytics. Their work will help us to offer the best logistics experience for our customers,” Bala Subramanian, EVP & Chief Digital and Technology Officer at UPS, told TOI. “We also intend to focus on bringing in talent from outside Chennai, especially women professionals, to be a part of this centre,” he added.

Globally, UPS has over 9,300 technology employees. In 2022, the company delivered an average of 24.3 million packages per day, and clocked total revenue of around $100.3 billion.
