UCC will lead to social unrest, says Deoband

AGRA: Prominent Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has joined other Muslim bodies, including AIMPLB, in objecting to implementation of the UCC, reports Mohammad Dilshad.

Abdul Khaliq Madrasi, deputy VC, Darul, said on Saturday, “The UCC will prove divisive and lead to social unrest. It is against the spirit of the Constitution, which safeguards the right of every citizen to practice his or her religion. Darul Uloom Deoband rejects the UCC and considers it unnecessary, rather contrary to fundamental rights.”

In a letter issued to the Law Commission, it said, “We believe that a common civil code for all communities in India is neither necessary nor desirable. Implementing it would mean that all personal religious laws shall become redundant...”
