A simple typing mistake in his PAN – ‘D’ became ‘0’ – made a Kolkata man a defaulter in the eyes of the income tax department 14 years ago. He had to move heaven and earth to get it fixed. This is the second part of his story

Ping! It was a text from my bank. My long-awaited income-tax refund had arrived, and an ordeal that started with a wrong PAN entry more than 10 years ago had ended. But jammed as I was in the senior citizen’s seat on a bus, with my laptop bag in my lap, I couldn’t jump for joy.

59 days gone

The refund had taken 59 days or nearly two months, counting from January 14, when the I-T department had cleared a confusion that had already caused a delay of four months.
