Twitter trend #TalkToAMuslim aims at defeating hate and spreading love
NEW DELHI: In an effort to fight off Islamophobia, Twitter today trended the hashtag #TalkToAMuslim.
The trend was initiated with an idea to help people overcome 'perceived' misconceptions about the Muslim community by engaging in a dialogue. It was also aimed at bridging the 'gulf' between the Muslims and the other communities.
At the time of writing this report, the trend had attracted 738 posts from over 500 users and it had reached over 6.6 million users on Twitter.
“This answers a lot of issues. The idea of #TalkToAMuslim is to engage a discussion. If the powers that be or the media could cross check, speak to Muslims before spreading falsehoods and propaganda, wouldn’t we all be better off?" read a tweet.

In fact, actress Bhaskar was among the most active contributors of the campaign aimed at busting several myths about the Muslim community.
"A powerful response to the hate politics being practiced by the present dispensation @BJP4India and its mouthpieces. #TalkToAMuslim, she tweeted.
Actress Gauahar Khan wrote - "...by land I am a Hindu, by faith I am a Muslim and by heart n soul INDIAN is my identity."
Several others concurred with Khan's sentiments, including author Nazia Erum.
Author Rana Safvi invited the online users for a discussion on topics ranging from Shakespeare to India's freedom struggle.
However, some of the online users were not convinced with the idea of "stating the obvious". "Isn’t it best to ignore the insane voices by not paying so much heed? By ignoring them, we totally insult them," one online user reasoned.
