Seasoned diplomat Anil Trigunayat explains why it may not be possible for India to mend ties with Canada unless the latter takes concrete actions against pro-Khalistan elements
Canada on September 19 expelled an Indian diplomat following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. Hours later, India hit back by expelling a Canadian diplomat.
Ambassador Anil Trigunayat, who has served in Indian missions in the US, Russia, Sweden, Nigeria, Libya among others, says that Canadian actions are not that of a friend or a country “that wishes good for you” and that they are “essentially against India's interests, which we have protected all the time”.
