The Valley seems to be bracing for an unusually busy summer as lockdown-weary travellers descend upon it

Last week I was in Kashmir for a well-deserved holiday (my first in over a year). Upon reaching there, I found, much like me, many tourists had descended upon the Valley seeking a desperate break. The traffic jam snaked all the way around Srinagar’s famous Dal Lake. You could see tourists and locals jostling with each other to reach the famous tulip gardens, where the flowers have begun to bloom. Covid for a good minute looked as a distant thing of the past.

The last few years have been particularly hard on Kashmir, which depends heavily on tourism to sustain its economy. Even before the lockdown wreaked havoc, local businesses were already down, with no internet for over 200 days to maintain law and order following the central government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
