Thirunavukkarasar appointed Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president
CHENNAI:
Thirunavukkarasar’s appointment has put an end to the unprecedented situation of the state unit remaining headless for the past three months since incumbent chief E V K S Elangovan resigned after being asked to do so following the debacle in the assembly elections. The party won just eight of the 41 seats it contested in alliance with the DMK.
The appointment of Thirunavukkarasar was announced in New Delhi by Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi on Wednesday. The announcement was welcomed by party cadre who had been concerned about the delay in naming the new
Loyalists of Elangovan had petitioned the high command not to appoint Thirunavukkarasar as TNCC chief as he was admitted to Congress only in 2009 after a stint with the BJP, during which he served as minister of state for IT and shipping in the Vajpayee ministry.
Thirunavukkarasar’s appointment is significant as he has steered clear of factional politics within the TNCC and is also understood to have the tacit support of one of the main factions led by senior leader P Chidambaram for his organisational and administrative capabilities. He is believed to have his work cut out towards reviving the fortunes of the party in the future elections.
Party sources said Thirunavukkarasar would meet party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday.
