ON BOARD PM'S AIRCRAFT: Guess what Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was doing at the NAM Summit at Havana, apart from, of course, discussing the onerous issue of ushering in a new world order? He was canvassing intensely for the candidature of Shashi Tharoor for the post of UN secretary-general. Singh himself said this. "Whenever I got an opportunity, I raised with heads of state and heads of government that we have an outstanding candidate in Shashi Tharoor for the post of UN secretary-general." He said Tharoor was in with a very good chance.
"He is running very strong. In the last straw poll that was conducted he came second." The PM, however, added that India and Tharoor had a "difficult task" ahead. "For the first time, we have jumped into the fray to assume our role in the management of international polity. It's not going to materialise in one day. I recognise that there are difficulties but I remain hopeful Tharoor will give a good account of himself."
