Terror in Pahalgam: Tourists gunned down in Kashmir’s 'mini Switzerland'

A brutal attack on tourists in Kashmir's Pahalgam has left more than 20 dead and several injured, shattering a period of relative calm in the region.

In a major terror strike on Tuesday, militants opened fire on tourists in Baisaran Valley, a popular scenic destination in Pahalgam, South Kashmir, killing multiple people and injuring at least 20, officials confirmed.

The attack occurred around 3 PM when terrorists descended from the surrounding mountains and targeted visitors in the lush green meadows often referred to as “mini Switzerland.”

While no group has claimed responsibility, suspicion falls on armed insurgents active in Kashmir since 1989. Security forces have launched large-scale anti-terror operations investigating the tragedy in which 24 are feared dead.

Chief minister Omar Abdullah said the attack was “much larger” than previous assaults on civilians. He called the perpetrators “inhuman” and promised a thorough investigation as authorities worked to confirm the full extent of the casualties.

Ambulances were rushed in to assist the victims. At Pahalgam hospital, medical staff confirmed 12 tourists were receiving treatment, adding that all were in stable condition.

In response to the attack, Anantnag Police have announced a 24/7 emergency help desk for tourists. Located at the Police Control Room, the desk aims to assist visitors with urgent needs, information, and ensure their safety in the wake of the violence.

Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti condemned the violence, calling it cowardly and inhuman. She mourned the deaths and said targeting peaceful tourists who had come to enjoy Kashmir’s beauty was an act of sheer brutality and shame for the entire region.

Jammu and Kashmir health minister Sakina Itoo visited the hospital where injured were treated. After the revocation of Kashmir’s limited autonomy in 2019, the Modi government intensified efforts to promote the region as a tourist hotspot.

After the Pahalgam terror attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah, directing him to take all necessary steps to manage the situation. Shah will also be leaving for Srinagar for an urgent review meeting. EAM S Jaishankar also condemned the cowardly terror attack.
