NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday was assailed by ruling alliance constituent TDP for starvation deaths which have continued despite a record stock of foodgrains.
Participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks to the President, M. V. V. S. Murthy (TDP) said it was a matter of shame that deaths due to hunger continued to stalk the country despite the government claim of a comfortable foodgrains position.
All efforts should be made to ensure adequate distribution of foodstuff among the targeted groups, he said.
Mani Shankar Aiyer (Congress) blamed the government for the recent stock scam and regretted that the then finance minister Yashwant Sinha had got away without being pulled up for his role in the entire episode.
Quoting Sinha claiming that he had been kept in the dark about controversial decisions made by the UTI, Aiyer accused him of being an incompetent minister.
