Supreme Court warns TN govt over bandh

The Supreme Court pulled up DMK-led Tamil Nadu government for failing to comply with its order on a bandh call given by the party.
CHENNAI: The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up DMK-led Tamil Nadu government for failing to comply with its order on a bandh call given by the party.
Though the Supreme Court had stayed the Tamil Nadu bandh called on Monday by the ruling DMK and its allies on the Sethusamudram project issue, buses in most parts of the state were off the roads and shops in main thoroughfares remained closed.

It was a 'virtual bandh' in the state, with Southern Railways operating only skeletal services. However, autorickshaws and taxis were seen plying in the city.
Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, along with DPA leaders are on day-long fast in front of the guest house in Chennai on Monday morning, demanding early implementation of the Sethusamudram project.
The Chief Minister had clarified on Sunday that the fast was not against the Apex Court ruling.

While the Chief Minister and DPA leaders are observing the fast in front of the government guest house in Chennai, workers of the alliance are observing it in front of all district and taluk headquarters in the state.
Alliance leaders, including PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss, TNCC state president M Krishnasamy, CPM leader N Vardarajan, CPI national secretary D Raja, Dravida Kazhagam leader K Veeramani, Dalit Panthers of India founder Tol Tirumavalavan, besides union shipping minister T R Baalu and minister of state for statistics, G K Vasan are participating in the fast.
Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha MP and his son, the local administration minister M K Stalin, besides electricity minister Arcot Veerasamy and finance minister K Anbazhagan also joined them in the fast.
