Smaller size, more capacity, and 80% charge in 6 minutes. Those are some of the promises of this technology. Here’s how it works

A new type of phone battery debuted in China last year. Phonemaker Honor said it had fitted its flagship ‘Magic 5 Pro’ phones with ‘silicon-carbon’ batteries that charge faster and hold more charge per gram. Other Honor phones, like Magic 6 Pro, have taken these batteries global since then. On September 26, Redmi also launched its Note 14 Pro+ phone in China with a silicon-carbon battery.

It’s a trend that has swept down from the premium end to the mid-range within a year. We’ll surely see a lot more ‘silicon-carbon’ in phone ads now. But what is a silicon-carbon battery? Is it completely different from the lithium batteries that have powered phones for almost 30 years?
