Should India's poorest be paying income tax?

If EWS families with an income of less than Rs 8 lakh are considered poor, a petitioner wants to know whether the government can collect tax from those with incomes above Rs 2.5 lakh

Almost four years ago, Parliament passed a constitutional amendment and created a new reservation quota for government jobs and college admissions. This quota is 10% for people from economically weaker sections (EWS). The Constitution already has reservations for those from Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and other backward classes (OBCs). It now has a fourth category of EWS.

There was hardly any debate in Parliament as all parties supported this amendment. An exception was a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) member from Tamil Nadu, Kanimozhi, who gave a spirited speech opposing the amendment.
