So Ran Soren: When Shibu Soren had ‘vanished’ like son Hemant

NEW DELHI: Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren's brief vanishing act and subsequent re-appearance over the last 24 hours has sparked comparisons with his father Shibu Soren, who went missing for over 10 days in 2004 when an arrest warrant was issued against him.

Social media was abuzz with posts recalling how Shibu Soren, who was then Union coal and mines minister under Manmohan Singh government, vanished from public eye for several days as police teams tried to trace him in both Jharkhand and New Delhi.

The hunt for senior Soren was launched after a court revived an arrest warrent against him in a three-decade-old case involving the massacre of 11 people during a clash in Jharkhand's Chirudih.

Interestingly, then UPA government had maintained a silence on the issue and the home ministry was unable to give answers on the drama that was unfolding.

Under pressure from the Centre, Shibu Soren tendered his resignation to then PM Manmohan Singh, even as his whereabouts were still not known.

He eventually resurfaced after 10 days in Ranchi, claiming that he was never in hiding but was in fact "interacting" with people in vilages and jungles of Jharkhand.

The high drama over the last 24 hours regarding Hemant Soren's absence from public eye prompted people to draw parallels with his father.



On Monday, ED sleuths searched the Delhi residence of the JMM leader and camped there for almost 13 hours in order to question him in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land deal in Jharkhand.

The officials eventually left the residence after waiting for Hemant Soren, but ended up seizing Rs 36 lakh, a BMW SUV and some "incriminating" documents.

The Jharkhand unit of the BJP claimed that the chief minister was "absconding", fearing ED action.

On Tuesday morning, the Jharkhand chief minister reached his official residence in Ranchi and chaired a meeting of the ruling alliance MLAs to discuss the present political situation in the state.
