Former CM Sheila Dikshit appointed as Delhi Congress chief, says 'she is honoured'

NEW DELHI: Former chief minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit was appointed as the head of the Delhi Congress on Thursday, Congress leader Ajay Maken announced on Twitter.

Post her appointment, Dikshit said that she is honoured that the party has given her this opportunity.


The former Congress president Ajay Maken, who resigned from his post earlier this month, congratulated Dikshit on her appointment. "I congratulate Sheila Dikshit on becoming the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president," Maken tweeted.

Maken said that under the leadership of Dikshit, his party will be able to play the role of a strong opposition to the governments of Narendra Modi at Centre and Arvind Kejriwal in the state.

"I am confident that under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit we will form a strong opposition against Modi+Kejriwal governments," he added.


Congress leader PC Chako too confirmed the appointment of Dikshit, along with other party leaders.

The search for Delhi Congress chief began after Ajay Maken resigned from the post on January 4, citing health reasons.

"Party president Rahul Gandhi will take two more days to finalise the name of the new Delhi Congress president. The new president's name will most likely be announced by January 10. Names of all senior leaders, including Sheila Dikshit, are under consideration," AICC in charge of Delhi Congress P C Chacko told reporters on the sidelines of an event.

However, an official announcement of Dikshit's appointment is yet to be made.

Sources said it would be made soon and she will have a few working presidents to assist her.

Eighty-year-old Dikshit has been a three-time chief minister of Delhi.
