SC seeks government stand on plea for court-monitored ADAG probe
NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Tuesday entertained a PIL accusing Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) companies of committing "one of the largest corporate frauds" by siphoning an estimated Rs 40,000 crore from banks through loans, and seeking a court-monitored probe by CBI and ED into the allegations, reports Dhananjay Mahapatra.
After briefly hearing advocate Prashant Bhushan, who appeared for petitioner E A S Sarma, a bench of CJI Bhushan R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran sought responses from the central govt, CBI, ED and Anil Ambani. When Bhushan requested Supreme Court to seek a probe status report from CBI and ED, the SC bench said it would be considered after receiving their responses.
The petition alleged that ADAG companies - Reliance Communications (RCOM), Reliance Infratel (RITL) and Reliance Telecom (RTL) - had cumulatively received loans to the tune of Rs 31,850 crore from a consortium of public sector banks led by State Bank of India between 2013 and 2017.
