MADURAI: Perhaps it’s the devil in the name that has cast its spell on our town, lament residents of Sathankulam that has drawn global attention over the alleged custodial deaths of P Jeyaraj and his son J Beniks in the last few weeks. ‘Sathan’ in Tamil refers to devil; same as ‘Satan’in English.
The town in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi district has been in the news over the alleged police torture and subsequent deaths of Jeyaraj, 58, and his son Beniks, 41, who ran a mobile shop near the Sathankulam old bus stand. The duo were thrashed by the Sathankulam police at the station in the night hours of June 19 after they were taken into custody. The reason for their arrest -- according to the police, they had kept their shop own during Covid-19 curfew hours. Three days later, on June 23-24, they both died within a few hours of each other.
