Sangli election results 2024 live updates: Independent Vishal Prakashbapu Patil wins

NEW DELHI: Vishal (Dada) Prakashbapu Patil, an independent candidate, emerged victorious with 571,666 votes, securing a margin of 100,053 votes over his nearest rival. Sanjay (Kaka) Patil of the Bharatiya Janata Party finished second with 471,613 votes.

Chandrahar Subhash Patil of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackrey) secured the third position with 60,860 votes, trailing the winner by a significant margin of 510,806 votes. The remaining candidates, including independents and those from various political parties, received votes ranging from 9,282 to 814.

The NOTA (None of the Above) option received 6,565 votes, which was higher than the vote share of several candidates in the fray.

Known as the ‘Turmeric City of India,’ Sangli went to polls in the third phase on May 7, 2024. This election saw a voter turnout of 62.27%, compared to 65.92% in 2019.

Independent candidate, Vishal Prakashbapu Patil is leading the race to Lok Sabha from this constituency with more than 2 lakh votes. He is ahead of BJP's Sanjay Patil with more than 40,000 votes.

Historically a Congress stronghold from 1962 to 2014, the constituency has been under BJP's influence for the past decade. Uddhav Thackrey-led Shiv Sena faction declared its candidate Wrestler-turned-politician Chandrahar Patil, without consulting its ally Congress. Consequently, Vishal Patil, the grandson of former CM Vasantdada Patil, is contesting as an independent candidate. This seat will witness a triangular fight between Chandrahar Patil (MVA), Vishal Patil (Congress rebel), and sitting MP Sanjaykaka Patil (Mahayuti). There seems to be a strong anti-incumbency wave in the constituency.

In the 2019 elections, Sanjaykaka Patil of the BJP secured victory with 508,995 votes, while Vishal Patil of the Socialist Worker’s Party (SWP) received 344,643 votes and Gopichand Padalkar of the Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi (VBA) garnered 300,234 votes. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the electoral scene was greatly impacted by the Modi wave, leading to Sanjaykaka Patil of the BJP emerging victorious with 611,563 votes, while Pratik Patil of the Congress secured 372,271 votes.

Floods, migration for jobs, and lack of development projects are among the key issues in Sangli. In 2021, the constituency faced massive floods, with official records indicating that more than 200 people died in the state that year. Despite boasting an education hub and good health infrastructure, the youth still move to Pune and Mumbai in search of jobs.
