RSS Centenary Celebrations Live: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has endured opposition over the past century to emerge as the world’s largest voluntary organisation, owing to people’s affection, general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale said on Wednesday. His remarks came shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a commemorative postage stamp and coin marking the RSS centenary.

Hosabale thanked the government for the gesture, calling it recognition of the Sangh’s “selfless” work. He noted that since its founding by Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar on Vijayadashmi in 1925, the RSS and its swayamsevaks have worked without self-interest, dedicated to nation-building through character development.

Speaking at a Union Culture Ministry event, Hosabale said, “It’s a matter of joy for the Sangh’s swayamsevaks and patriots … that the government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to release a postage stamp and coin on this special occasion. On behalf of all the swayamsevaks, including those living abroad, I want to express my gratitude for this.”

He added that India has a long tradition of honouring individuals and organisations for their contributions, which the government has carried forward. “I believe that in this way recognition has been given to Sangh's work on behalf of people of Bharat on the occasion of Sangh's centenary,” he said.

Reflecting on the organisation’s journey, Hosabale described the RSS’s 100 years as “interesting,” saying it had come this far because of people’s acceptance and support. “Sangh had to face all kinds of indifference, opposition, struggle, and udasinta, but since the day (RSS foundation), Sangh workers experienced people's intimacy, affection, support and cooperation,” he said.
