RG Kar case: Hospital horror spurs overhaul in WB medical colleges

KOLKATA: The rape and murder of a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College have prompted reforms in the system in Bengal, amid calls for safety and transparency. Doctors have welcomed the changes but also raised concerns about the “inequitable distribution of manpower”, which they said may hinder the implementation of some measures.

The reforms include installating CCTVs and upgrading infrastructure on college campuses, eliminating corrupt practices in examinations, monitoring professors’ duty hours at govt facilities, and revising rules for private practice. New rules mandate govt doctors must be within a 20km radius of their assigned hospitals and report within 24 hours if called for an emergency.
