NEW DELHI: Noted Malayalam writer-director and Jnanpith award winner MT Vasudevan Nair died at 91 on Wednesday in Kozhikode.
He was under the care of a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including cardiologists and critical care experts, since his hospitalisation last week.
The office of Kerala's chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed receiving the information about MT's demise.
The Kerala government has declared official mourning on December 26 and 27 to honour Nair. Meanwhile, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed postponement of all government events, including the cabinet meeting scheduled for December 26, as a mark of respect, his office said.
Popularly referred to as MT, he made an indelible mark on Malayalam literature and cinema, with contributions spanning novels, short stories, screenplays, children's literature, travel writing, and essays. He directed six films, including the iconic 'Nirmalyam,' a classic in Malayalam cinema, along with two documentaries.
