However, after Mayawati took over chief minister of UP in BSP-BJP alliance government in 2002, Verma shot to limelight for all the wrong reasons. He was arrested for the murder of senior Lawyer ID Singh in Lucknow.
His arrest came after Singh's wife lodged an FIR accusing him along with a senior PCS officer and his wife for orchestrating the murder.
A Kurmi by caste, Verma even wanted to contest Lok Sabha election in 2004. However, he was denied the ticket after Vinay Katiyar decided to contest from Lakhimpur Kheri constituency.
Nighasan is going to by poll on September 13 after Ajay Misra 'Teini' the BJP MLA from there vacated the seat after he contested Lok Sabha election and won it.
