NEW DELHI: Is it the Dhoom hangover or the suddenly great Delhi weather? Whatever, it fired the biker in Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who revved his red mobike on Sunday and zoomed off with brother-in-law Robert for company.

It made for an exotic entourage on an October afternoon already made different by a sudden shower and a winter-like chill.
There were Rahul and Robert on two bikes, helmets, knee pads, the works. And then there was the SPG escort, in three cars, racing to keep the VIP in sight.

No, not a flight of fancy this. Down south Delhi’s roads they sped from Robert Vadra’s Lodi Estate residence towards Ashram chowk, people none the wiser that behind one of the helmets was a Gandhi.

Nothing unusual about a 34-year-old going vroom on his day off, except that the Gandhis have never quite lived ordinary lives.

They are not given to indulging the sudden urge to get some fresh air on the Capital’s roads. Forever ringed by heavy security, such moments of abandon are few. And no doubt a nightmare for the SPG that protects them.

The adventure seems to have taken even close aides by surprise. "What next?" laughs one, "He’ll probably ride a bicycle in Amethi." Rahul, who left on Monday for his constituency, is more carefree once he hits the UP heartlands.

That is when the shy and reserved MP gets up close and personal, again to the considerable consternation of the SPG men, who sweat it out while making sure he is safe in the crowds.

For those who thrive on wheels and such trivia, Rahul drives a red Honda with a high mudguard. Move over Mumbai and its stylish denizens on bikes – a la John Abraham. Delhi’s celebs are scorching the roads now.
