'Proud to lead social revolution': Telangana CM Revanth Reddy says will 'ensure' 42% reservation for OBCs

NEW DELHI: Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy on Monday said he will take necessary steps to implement 42 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in education and employment. He also called on all political parties to come together and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the issue.

"Today, as the Leader of the Telangana legislative assembly, as chief minister I solemnly declare that based on the most scientific, methodically rigorous, and excruciating efforts of our people, we can say that the OBCs population in Telangana is 56.36 percent," CM Reddy said.

He further said, "We are now resolving to ensure 42 percent reservations for this Group in all walks of life - education, jobs and employment & political representation."



The state government introduced two bills in the Assembly on Monday: the Backward Classes, SCs and STs (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions and of Appointments or Posts in the Services) Bill and The Telangana Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Rural and Urban Local Bodies) Bill, 2025. All parties, including the BRS, BJP, AIMIM, and CPI, supported the bills and made recommendations to the government.

The Telangana Legislative Assembly passed both bills, but they require approval from the central government for implementation.

CM Reddy mentioned that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had promised to increase BC reservation to 42 per cent if the party came to power. Soon after forming the government, the BC caste census was launched on February 4, 2024.

Reddy said that the previous government had proposed increasing BC reservations to 37%. "This government is withdrawing the earlier proposal and sending a new proposal of 42 per cent reservation for BCs in education, employment and political opportunities," he said.

He also noted that February 4 is observed as 'Social Justice Day' in Telangana, as the state government passed a resolution on this day to increase BC reservation. "After eliciting opinions and views from many sections, the state government introduced this bill to provide 42 per cent reservation to BCs," Reddy said, according to a statement from his office.

"As the leader of the House, I am assuring that I will take proactive measures and lead to achieve 42 per cent BC reservation. Appealing to all the leaders of all parties to join together and meet the Prime Minister on the issue," Reddy said.

"We will not sit calm until 42 per cent reservation is achieved for BCs. We are committed to the Kamareddy Declaration," the Telangana chief minister said.
