Protests and Abhaya clinics mark victim’s 32nd birthday

Doctors' rally at RG Kar college

In the evening, junior doctors gathered at the ‘Cry of the Hour’ statue on the RG Kar Medical College campus to pay tribute to the victim. They reaffirmed their support for the victim’s family in their ongoing fight for justice.


A rally, led by junior and senior doctors along with members of the Citizen Forum, commenced from College Square and proceeded towards Shyambazar in silent protest.


However, security personnel halted the march at the main gate of RG Kar Medical College, locking the entrance. The demonstrators were later permitted inside to pay their respects. (Photo: ANI)

A Birthday once dedicated to patients

"My daughter always used to treat patients on her birthday. Every year, we celebrated with payesh and a cake-cutting at night. But this year, her 32nd birthday was observed with tears at Abhaya clinic," said the late intern's mother. (Photo: ANI)

CBI seeks harsher punishment for accused

On January 18, a lower court sentenced Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the RG Kar rape-murder case, to life imprisonment. However, the CBI has approached the High Court, appealing for capital punishment, citing the heinous nature of the crime committed on August 9 last year.

‘We vow to continue our fight for justice’

In Panihati, close to the victim’s residence, residents organised a silent march. The procession, which began from her home, marched to Sodepur’s Kanch Kal More.


"On her birthday, we vowed to continue our fight for justice. Everyone who stood with us on Sunday reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that my daughter gets justice," her father said. (Photo: ANI)
