NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for successfully test-firing indigenously developed intercontinental ballistic missile - Agni-V.

"The successful test firing of Agni V is the result of the hardwork of DRDO & its scientists. I congratulate them. @DRDO_India," PM Modi said in a tweet.
PM Modi also said that the successful test firing of the missile is a proud moment for every Indian and would add tremendous strength to India's strategic defence.

On Monday, India test-fired nuclear-capable Agni-V, off the coast of Odisha. The indigenously built missile can even reach the northernmost parts of China with its strike range of over 5,000 km.

Meanwhile, the President of India Pranab Mukherjee has congratulated DRDO on the successful test-firing of intercontinental ballistic missile - 'Agni-V'.

Once the Agni-V is inducted, India will join the super exclusive club of countries with ICBMs (missiles with a range of over 5,000-5,500km) alongside the US, Russia, China, France and the UK.

Apart from the shorter-range Prithvi and Dhanush missiles, the SFC has inducted the Agni-I, Agni-II and Agni-III missiles. While these missiles are mainly geared towards Pakistan, the Agni-IV and Agni-V are specifically meant for deterrence against China. Beijing, of course, is leagues ahead in terms of its missile and nuclear arsenals.
