CHANDIGARH: President A P J Abdul Kalam, supreme commander of defence forces, on Thursday promised a national war memorial, the first planned in New Delhi post-independence. All war memorials in the country are pre-independence, British-built.
Responding to a call given by Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator Gen S F Rodrigues, Kalam, after inaugurating the Chandigarh War Memorial that came up on a citizen's initiative, said, "I shall work for a national war memorial at Delhi, which will truly be a national honour to the 8,459 men from the Army, Navy and the IAF, who laid down their lives since 1947, for us to enjoy this freedom."
Paying rich tributes to the armed forces personnel, martyrs, widows, and veterans, the President expressed happiness that the excess money from the War Memorial Fund would be utilised in construction of schools and hospitals in villages of martyrs from the region north of Delhi.

Earlier, Gen Rodrigues, while making a plea for a national monument, said, "I am asking for a boon from my supreme commander. The country should have a national memorial for the martyrs in New Delhi as well.
