BHIKHIWIND: Political leaders of all hues continued to visit Bhikhiwind, the native village of
Sarabjit Singh, to condole his death, even a day after his funeral on Friday. Those who met Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur and other family members included Punjab Congress leaders Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Mohinder Singh Kaypee, vice-chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes Raj Kumar, and BSP leader Mohinder Kashyap.
While talking to ToI, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said: “The Indian government did its best to bring Sarabjit back from Pakistan, but it had its limits, as Pakistan did not listen to India’s pleas.” Congress leader Mohinder Singh Kaypee assured Sarabjit’s family of government’s support. “The inhumane face of Pakistan has been exposed after the brutal killing of Sarabjit,” he said. Blaming the UPA government, BSP national general secretary Narinder Kashyap said: “If the Indian government had reacted in time, the Indian prisoner could have been saved.”
Meanwhile, the markets of Bhikhiwind opened on Saturday after remaining shut for three consecutive days. A close associate of Sarabjit’s family Prince Bhikhiwind said akhand path (continuous recitation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib) would begin on May 9, and the Bhog (conclusion ceremony of akhand path) would be held on May 11.
