PM Modi UK Visit Live Updates: PM Modi gifts tree sapling to King Charles III - 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' takes root in UK

India and the UK on Thursday signed a landmark free trade agreement (FTA) that will cut tariffs on British whisky, cars and an array of items, besides boosting bilateral trade by around USD 34 billion annually.

The deal was signed by commerce minister Piyush Goyal and his British counterpart Jonathan Reynold in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Keir Starmer.

The FTA is expected to benefit 99 per cent Indian exports from tariff and will make it easier for British firms to export whisky, cars and other products to India, besides boosting the overall trade basket, according to Indian officials.

The deal, firmed up after three years of negotiations, is expected to ensure comprehensive market access for Indian goods across all sectors and India will gain from tariff elimination on about 99 per cent of tariff lines (product categories) covering almost 100 per cent of the trade values, they said.

The UK said Indian consumers will benefit from improved access to the best British products -- from soft drinks and cosmetics to cars and medical devices -- as average tariffs will drop from 15 per cent to 3 per cent after the FTA kicks in.

The UK already imports 11 billion pounds in goods from India but liberalised tariffs on Indian goods will make it easier and cheaper for British consumers and businesses to buy Indian products and boost Indian businesses' exports to the UK, it said in a statement, hours before the FTA was inked.

PM Modi, Starmer to sign landmark India-UK trade deal 2035, unveil renewed Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the UK on Thursday to sign the landmark UK-India trade deal, which will boost bilateral trade by £25.5bn every year, as per an official statement from the British High Commission.

The statement noted that the deal promises to unlock thousands of jobs and boost growth across both economies. During the visit of PM Modi, the leaders will unveil their vision for a modern, reinvigorated partnership over the next decade- The UK-India Vision 2035, a renewed Comprehensive Strategic Partnership--taking the relationship to new heights in a time of rapid global change.

The trade deal, which is forecast to boost bilateral trade by £25.5 billion yearly, is both India's most comprehensive deal ever, and the UK's most economically significant bilateral trade deal since leaving the EU. It significantly improves market access for businesses in both countries, leading to cheaper products and services for consumers, the statement said.

It also observed that the UK and India's ambitious new vision for 2035 will go beyond trade, with reinvigorated mutual commitment to drive prosperity and innovation, deepen defence cooperation through a new Defence Industrial roadmap, work together to secure our borders, tackle climate change and nurture educational connections.

Marking exactly one year since the countries signed the landmark UK-India Technology Security Initiative, the Prime Ministers will also commit to further strengthen national security by harnessing frontier technologies and shaping the technologies of tomorrow.

When Narendra Modi, as Gujarat CM, visited UK to thank diaspora for assistance during Bhuj quake
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to the United Kingdom, an old incident of his 'UK diaspora connect' has come to light, where he made special efforts to thank the people of Indian origin in Britain for the assistance they extended to Gujarat, particularly Bhuj, hit by one of the worst earthquakes in 2001.

In January 2001, Gujarat's Bhuj town was struck by a devastating earthquake of 6.9 magnitude, claiming thousands of lives.

The instance of PM Modi's "thanksgiving" to the Indian diaspora in the UK has been shared by Modi Archive, a popular social media handle on X.

Narrating the devastation and rehabilitation of Bhuj post-quake, it says that in August 2003, two years after the Bhuj earthquake shook Gujarat, the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to the United Kingdom with a special message for the diaspora - "You are all the real friends of Gujarat".

The visit, which was primarily for thanking the Indian diaspora, saw CM Modi addressing thousands of Indians who had mobilised support, aid, and resources for Gujarat during the 2001 earthquake.

PM Modi UK Visit Live: Diaspora and cultural ties - A 'living bridge'
The Indian diaspora, comprising 2.7% of the UK’s population, plays a vital role in shaping bilateral relations. This “living bridge” has contributed significantly to British society and the UK economy while deepening cultural and economic cooperation. The upcoming FTA is also expected to positively impact Indian professionals and students.

Education and healthcare are among key focus areas in the evolving relationship. Foreign Secretary Misri said people-to-people contacts form a “key pillar of growth.” Mahesh Sachdev highlighted the historical roots of the India-UK connection, going back five centuries. He said, “We are at a different time... independent and strong... to enable both sides to reap early harvests of economic integration.”

As both governments push to finalise the FTA, ties across multiple sectors—defence, trade, science, and cultural exchange—are expected to deepen, marking a new chapter in the long-standing India-UK relationship.

PM Modi UK Visit Live: India-Maldives relations back in spotlight amid anniversary visit
Following his UK visit, PM Modi will head to the Maldives from July 25–26 at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu. He will attend the 60th Independence Day celebrations as Guest of Honour.

The visit is significant as it marks the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives diplomatic ties. Former Maldivian Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon said, “India was one of the first countries to provide assistance” during the 1988 coup attempt, tsunami, and COVID-19 crisis. She stressed India’s leadership in the Indian Ocean Region, saying, “India has a responsibility for maintaining peace and security.”

Tourism remains a cornerstone of Maldives’ economy, and Maumoon welcomed the growing number of Indian visitors. Despite diplomatic strains in 2023, she urged a return to “warm ties,” noting the importance of cultural and medical exchanges. This will be Modi’s third visit to the Maldives, and the first by a head of state during Muizzu’s presidency.

PM Modi UK Visit Live: Strategic ties strengthen as trade and tech take centre stage
India-UK relations, once rooted in colonial history, have evolved into a “robust, multi-faceted” partnership. Mahesh Sachdev noted, “India overtook Britain as the world's 5th largest economy three years ago,” adding that the UK is now keen to anchor its post-Brexit trade around dynamic economies like India.

He said, “India's profile matches what the UK wishes to have as a big market,” while India looks to Britain as “a source of technology and transit goods.”

Sachdev also observed that this treaty could recalibrate Britain’s “whimsical” foreign policy tendencies. “Such a large agreement... would anchor UK's policies towards India,” he said. With five ministerial-level dialogues and increasing collaboration in AI, defence, and semiconductors, bilateral cooperation has deepened. Bilateral trade reached a record USD 55 billion in 2024, up 10% from the previous year, and the FTA is expected to supercharge future economic engagement between the two nations.

PM Modi UK Visit Live: India flags concerns over Khalistan and fugitives
New Delhi is expected to raise the issue of Khalistani extremists operating from UK soil—a long-standing concern for India. He added, “We will continue to do so. This is a matter of concern not only to us but should be a matter of concern to our partners as well.” On the extradition of fugitives from the UK, Misri said the process is ongoing. “We have continued to make the case for these fugitives to be rendered to India. There is a legal process that such requests go through in the other country,” he said, noting that India is working “very closely” with British authorities. The two sides are expected to discuss legal cooperation further during the visit.

During his two-day stay, PM Modi will meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for “wide-ranging discussions” on bilateral, regional and global issues. He is also scheduled to call on King Charles III.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described areas like “business, technology, research, education, innovation and the knowledge economy” as emerging pillars of cooperation. With the FTA nearly finalised, Doraiswami said it’s “a good time for the relationship.”

He also praised the Commerce Ministry’s work, calling the FTA “a significant milestone.” The visit marks the latest step in deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership formed in 2021, which now encompasses trade, defence, security, climate, and people-to-people ties.

PM Modi UK Visit Live: PM Modi heads to UK to seal landmark free trade deal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for the United Kingdom on Wednesday, kicking off a two-nation visit that will include the Maldives. His UK stop, from July 23–24, is expected to culminate in the signing of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a deal three years in the making.

The FTA promises to eliminate tariffs on 99% of Indian exports and slash tariffs on 90% of British goods. The pact is projected to double bilateral trade by 2030, which currently stands at USD 60 billion. British whisky and cars are among the key exports set to benefit.

Former diplomat Mahesh Sachdev called the FTA the “seminal point of the visit,” noting it would remove “high tariffs or other restrictions” and boost services trade. Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami confirmed that “substantive negotiations” ended in May and “scrubbing work is underway,” paving the way for signing and implementation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for the United Kingdom on Wednesday, marking the first leg of his two-nation visit. His UK trip, from 23–24 July, aims to boost bilateral relations, with the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) expected to be a key milestone.

“Leaving for the UK, a country with which our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has achieved significant momentum in the last few years. I look forward to my talks with PM Keir Starmer and my meeting with His Majesty King Charles III,” Modi said on X.

The FTA, under negotiation for three years, is expected to eliminate tariffs on 99% of Indian exports and lower tariffs on 90% of British goods, potentially doubling bilateral trade by 2030.

During the visit, Modi will discuss regional and global matters with PM Starmer, and raise concerns over Khalistani extremism.

Modi will then visit the Maldives from 25–26 July to attend its 60th Independence Day and meet President Mohamed Muizzu.
