The attack

The attack was carried out by five terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). They infiltrated the parliament complex using fake identity stickers and launched a violent assault, armed with AK-47s, grenade launchers, and pistols. (PTI photo)

Heroic defence

Security forces, including Delhi police and parliament security personnel, acted swiftly. They engaged the terrorists in a fierce gunfight, preventing them from entering the main building. All five attackers were neutralised within minutes, averting a national catastrophe. (PTI photo)

The sacrifice

Eight personnel, including police officers and a gardener, laid down their lives protecting parliament. They thwarted a grave threat to the nation's leaders, who were present in large numbers during the winter session. (PTI photo)

Nation united

President Droupadi Murmu also on friday honoured those who lost their lives in the 2001 parliament attack, affirming that the nation remains steadfast and united in its fight against terrorism. (ANI photo)

Remembering the fallen

It may be recalled that Jagdish, Matbar, Kamlesh Kumari; assistant sub-inspectors Nanak Chand and Rampal of Delhi Police; head constables Om Prakash, Bijender Singh, and Ghanshyam of Delhi police; and Deshraj, a gardener from CPWD, sacrificed their lives while defending the parliament during the attack. Lasting impact

The attack led to enhanced protection measures for critical institutions. It also intensified tensions with Pakistan, as Indian agencies attributed the attack to Pakistan-based terrorist organisations and its intelligence agency, ISI. Muhammad Afzal Guru of Jaish-e-Mohammad was hanged for his role in the attack, in 2013. (PTI photo)
