'PM Modi has hijacked Parliament': Gaurav Gogoi hits out as Winter Session begins; claims govt only wants to 'pass their bills'
NEW DELHI: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi took a sharp dig at Prime Minister and BJP-led central government claimg that "Narendra Modi has hijacked the Parliament" as the Parliament Winter Session began on Monday.
Sharing a post on X, the Congress MP said, "Prime Minister Modi has hijacked the Parliament of India. The Prime Minister does not want to be held accountable to any of the major issues raised by the political parties."
He said that during a meeting of floor leaders, opposition parties had sought a discussion on the Indian election system, but the BJP "is simply refusing."
"In the meeting of floor leaders, all political parties belonging to the opposition wanted to discuss the Indian election system. Yet the BJP is simply refusing to list the discussion in the parliament agenda for this week. Political parties want the Parliament to reflect the agenda of both the ruling and the opposition," he wrote on X.
Ahead of the session, Gogoi told ANI that while the Congress is willing to cooperate with the government only "wants to pass their bills and has no space to accommodate the issues raised by the opposition".
"The Congress party and the opposition parties are willing to cooperate with the government on all bills that this government wants to pass in this session. Our only request is that if we are cooperating on all bills brought by the government, allow us to raise certain issues, and the government should also accommodate certain issues of the opposition in the agenda of discussion. But we are seeing that the government only wants to pass their bills and has no space to accommodate the issues raised by the opposition. That is not how parliamentary democracy functions," he said.
"If the government is willing to take up an issue of the opposition, let them publish that agenda item in the business. They say one thing, but they don't walk the talk. That is the problem," he added. The Congress MP has also moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha seeking a debate on electoral roll vulnerabilities saying, "I seek to move an Adjournment Motion to raise an issue of grave national concern."
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took a swipe at the central government, stating that they "do not want to have a discussion on anything."
"The government does not want to have a discussion on anything. Then how will the House run? They should listen to at least one thing that we ask. If not on SIR, then the election reforms or any other related issue can be discussed. How will the House run if they don't discuss anything?.." she said.
Priyanka further took a jibe at Modi alleging that Prime Minister "should peek outside a little and see what all is happening in the country."
"The PM also asked everyone to enjoy the weather. Which weather are Delhites supposed to enjoy? He should peek outside a little and see what all is happening in the country..." she added.
Her comments came after PM took a swipe at the Opposition bloc, ahead of the Parliament session saying that "whoever wants to do drama can do it. There should be delivery here and not drama...the emphasis should be on policy, not slogans."
