NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday presented a Banarasi saree to Mauritius President Dharam Gokhool's wife Brinda during his visit to Mauritius for the country’s National Day celebrations.
The saree gifted by PM Modi is crafted from fine silk and has intricate silver zari motifs, a broad zari border and a richly designed pallu. The saree, in an elegant royal blue shade, is traditionally worn on grand occasions such as weddings and festivals.
The saree was presented in a handcrafted Sadeli box from Gujarat. Known for its delicate inlay work, the Sadeli box is often used to store valuable items such as sarees, jewellery and keepsakes.
PM Modi also gifted Gangajal from the Maha Kumbh to President Gokhool, further showcasing India’s spiritual and traditional heritage.
He also attended the National Day celebrations as the chief guest and later participated in a special lunch hosted by President Gokhool.
Expressing his gratitude, PM Modi said, "It is once again my privilege to attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius as the Chief Guest. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Hon'ble President for this warm hospitality and honour. This is not just an occasion for a meal but a symbol of the vibrant and close ties between India and Mauritius."
Highlighting the cultural similarities between the two nations, he added, "The warmth of Mauritian hospitality carries the sweetness of our friendship."
