PM Modi: 3-nation tour chance to thank partners for backing India's fight against terror
Ahead of his departure for Cyprus on Sunday, PM Narendra Modi said his three-nation tour was also an opportunity to thank partner countries for their "steadfast support" to India in its fight against cross-border terrorism, and to galvanise global understanding on tackling terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
PM Modi arrived in Cyprus on Sunday afternoon and was received at the airport by President Nikos Christodoulides. A formal bilateral meeting will take place today.
He will also travel to Canada and Croatia during what is his first visit abroad since Operation Sindoor. PM Modi will participate in the G7 outreach session on Tuesday.
While he will look to address issues related to the Global South at G7, PM Modi is expected to touch upon Pakistan's support to cross-border terror in several bilateral meetings on the sidelines.
Modi expected to meet Trump at G7 summit, but no confirmationPM Narendra Modi is expected to meet US President Donald Trump at the G7 summit, but government sources did not confirm if a formal meeting has been scheduled yet. “The summit will provide space for the exchange of views on pressing global issues and the priorities of the Global South. I also look forward to engaging with leaders from partner countries,” PM Modi said in his departure statement.
He described Cyprus as a close friend and an important partner in the Mediterranean region and the EU. “The visit provides an opportunity to build upon the historical bonds and expand our ties in the areas of trade, investment, security, technology and promote people-to-people exchanges,” PM Modi said. The two leaders are expected to discuss Cyprus's possible role in facilitating the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).
On his way back from Canada, Modi will visit Croatia, becoming the first Indian PM to do so. “On June 18, I look forward to my visit to the Republic of Croatia and meetings with President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic. Both our countries enjoy centuries-old close cultural links. As the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Croatia, it will open new avenues for bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest,’’ the PM said.
