Piyush Goyal writes to UP CM Yogi Adityanath: Praises GeM adoption; calls it ‘source of inspiration’
Union Minister Piyush Goyal, in a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, commended the state’s extensive adoption of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) platform. He praised Uttar Pradesh’s extensive adoption of the platform, describing the state’s efforts as “a source of inspiration for the rest of the country.”
GeM, the central government’s public procurement portal, was developed to streamline the acquisition of goods and services by government ministries, departments, public sector undertakings, autonomous bodies, and local authorities. The platform has seen rapid growth in recent years, with the 2024–25 financial year alone registering over 72 lakh purchase orders, amounting to Rs 5.43 lakh crore in value. Since its launch, the portal has processed over Rs 14 lakh crore in procurement across 2.9 crore orders.
In his letter, Piyush Goyal credited Uttar Pradesh for playing a pivotal role in this growth, noting that figures from the state over five consecutive years reflect strong institutional trust in the platform. “The trust of the State of Uttar Pradesh in GeM is clearly evident from the consistent growth in procurement figures over the past five financial years,” he wrote.
A key milestone in this progress was the state government’s issuance of a comprehensive order on 26 November 2024. The order mandated 100% implementation of GeM across all state departments. This move combined various existing procurement related directives into a streamlined structure.
“This move enhances transparency, efficiency and inclusiveness in procurement, reflecting the very vision with which GeM was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister,” the minister wrote, positioning Uttar Pradesh’s policy move as aligned with broader national objectives under Digital India.
Among the highest procuring departments were urban development, health, IT, medical education, and home. Urban development alone accounted for purchases exceeding ₹11,588 crore.
The Union minister ended the letter by expressing confidence in the state’s continued cooperation, stating that Uttar Pradesh’s approach could serve as a model for other states undertaking procurement reforms. “I sincerely hope your support will continue in the future as well,” he concluded.
