'Parliament is where democracy speaks': Congress MP Manickam Tagore slams PM Modi; questions his silence on Trump ceasefire claim

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Thursday criticised the centre, alleging that a nameplate has been installed on the new Parliament building and said that the ruling government is still silent on US President Donald Trump's claims that he brokered the ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

In a post on X, Tagore said that the Parliament finally decided to proceed with the Monsoon Session but disrespected the MPs' repeated demands on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam attack.

"Good that the Parliamentary Affairs Minister finally put a board saying “Parliament” on the new building. At least now we can be sure which building the government has been avoiding all this," he said.


Referring to a letter signed by 240 Lok Sabha MPs demanding a special session to discuss the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, Tagore said that the government responded with silence.

"First time in history such a large democratic request was ignored. What’s next, ignoring elections? Now, finally, we have a Monsoon Session. But no word yet from PM Modi on Trump’s claim that he called 14 times and 'threatened' Modi into a ceasefire. Strong words. And our PM? Still on silent mode," he added.

He also said that now the Parliament exists with a nameplate but no respect for MPs’ demands, and no statement on foreign leaders claiming to pressure India.

"Parliament is not a museum, Mr. Modi. It’s where democracy speaks," he said.

The forthcoming Monsoon session marks Parliament's first meeting since Operation Sindoor, which India initiated on May 7 following a terrorist strike in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in 26 casualties.

The Parliament's Budget session commenced on January 31 this year, during which crucial bills were passed, including the Waqf Amendment Bill.

Parliament proceedings will not take place on August 13 and 14 owing to Independence Day observances.
