NEW DELHI: While it is still not clear if there will be any formal meeting between Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart
Nawaz Sharif at the United Nations general assembly next week, Islamabad is awaiting a "positive signal" from India with regards to repatriation of a 13-year-old son of a Pakistani fishermen languishing in a Gujarat jail.
Pakistan has officially confirmed the nationality of Ghulam Hussain Cheero, described by Islamabad as a teenager fisherman whose father was released from an Indian jail a few months ago.
Pakistan has sought from MEA immediate repatriation of Ghulam Hussain.
"PM Modi in response to the release of 163 Indian fishermen had promised that India will release Pakistani fishermen before Eid-ul-Fitr. Now it's Eid-ul-Adha. Our fishermen are rotting in the Indian jails despite assurances from the highest office of India," said a Pakistani official.
Reports from New York said on Tuesday that the two prime ministers could have a "handshake meeting", staying as they are in the same hotel. MEA sources said it wasn't possible to confirm or rule out anything at this stage.
Sharif will address the general debate of the general assembly on September 30. "He will articulate the government’s vision of a peaceful neighbourhood and economic development, and share with the world community, Pakistan’s position and priorities on key international and regional issues," said Pakistan in a statement.
Sharif will also participate in a high-level roundtable on South-South Cooperation, and the global leaders’ meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, being hosted by President Xi Jinping of China.
While Pakistan said Sharif will also hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders on the margins of the session, sources said there was still no proposal for a meeting with PM Modi.
