JAMMU: The Kopra post in the Sabsian sub-sector of Poonch on the Line of Control (LoC) was on Monday morning targeted by the Pakistani troops with rockets which lasted 20 minutes, while on the international border the Pakistanis considerably scaled down their volume of fire on Sunday and Monday.
On Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday, the Pakistanis had unleashed some of the fiercest shelling witnessed so far in the Ranbirsinghpora sector of the international border, killing five persons and injuring seven in the Gujjar Dera belt between Abdullian and Karotna Khud village.
The injured have been admitted to hospital in Jammu.
In the Poonch sector, Pakistani firing and shelling on Sunday claimed the life of a child at Kaushalya village, while another civilian was injured at Karmara village. Between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Sunday, the Pakistanis fired at and shelled the Poonch sector posts and the villages of Kirri, Degwar, Ajot, Nagarkot, Khari Karmari, Kaushalaya, Jhalas and Salotri. No fresh migration has been reported in Poonch district, which saw the migration of 21,900 people from forward villages during the mobilisation of Indian troops along the border in December-January. The migrant camps are in Poonch town, Dhar Galcom and Mandi.
In the Nowshera sector of Rajouri district, which has lately seen some of the fiercest Pakistani shelling, including with light artillery, a BSF jawan was killed and another injured at the Dadel post on Sunday. In this sector, the Pakistanis also fired at and shelled the villages of Manaka Mahadev, Bhawani, Gania, Manpur, Saris, Karali, Jhangar, Makri, Kalal, Sher, Namb and Mangla Mata. Kalal and Manaka Mahadev had been facing shelling for two days, but was particularly heavy on Sunday.
Fires caused by Pakistani shelling have been seen in the Manaka Mahadev jungles for the last three days. Villages in the Nowshera sector, which came under fire on Sunday, are now totally deserted.
The majority of their population had migrated earlier, but Sunday’s shelling forced even those left behind to tend their farm animals to migrate. On the international border, the Pakistanis on Sunday fired 18 shells into the Ramgarh area in Samba sector and 14 at Arnia in the Ranbirsinghpura sector.
