Punjab’s Road Safety Force (SSF), launched in January 2024 under the leadership of chief minister Bhagwant Mann has saved over 35,000 lives by providing rapid medical assistance at accident sites.
The force has made significant strides in improving road safety, emergency response times, and public security across the state, according to official figures released by the state government.
The SSF currently covers approximately 4,100 kilometers of roads, with teams stationed every 30 kilometers.
Around 28% of SSF personnel are women, a figure presented as part of a broader push toward inclusion and empowerment, as per government data. In addition to road safety duties, SSF units have been involved in law enforcement efforts such as preventing drug trafficking, vehicle theft, and suicide attempts.
No school-going child lost their lives in road accidents in SSF patrolled areas, a first for the state, as per official data.
The SSF also operates with the support of various technologies, including speed detection equipment, body cameras, AI-based surveillance tools, and digital enforcement systems like e-challans.
The SSF has also contributed to a reduction in hospital emergency cases and insurance claims, while also improving road traffic and enhancing citizens’ sense of safety, as per the government. Officials also said that the initiative has had a positive impact on tourism and public confidence in governance.
