GUWAHATI: The
Assam government on Tuesday said it won’t set up any of the proposed 200 foreigners’
tribunals
that are supposed to hear appeals filed by those excluded from the
National Register of Citizens (NRC) until the SC decides on the validity of the citizenship rolls.
“These 200 tribunals are meant to exclusively hear appeals filed by the 19 lakh people left out (of the NRC). If the tribunals are set up now, we will have to pay salaries. Unless the SC approves the published NRC, who will go to the tribunals to appeal?” minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The government has identified 79 locations to set up the 200 tribunals that will potentially handle 19,06,657 appeals against the final NRC that was published last August.
